Don't Play with Your Food.
I am convinced that there’s an aspect to the creative side of a photographer’s mind that says, “Let’s find a rule and break it — with style.”
This month that rule was, “Don’t play with your food.”
So naturally, we set up a studio, dialed in the lighting, dressed up an adorable baby in her Sunday best…
… put a delectable birthday cake on the floor…
and set the little birthday girl free…
and let her SMASH that rule.
And it was absolutely adorable.
Now, the proper name for this kind of baby photography is a cake smash photo session.
It’s a really fun way to celebrate your child’s first birthday and their first taste of pure refined birthday cake sugar.
This cake smash photo session was my first go at this style of family photography, and I so enjoyed it. The photos came out great, the lighting was even and soft, and the subject was just too cute. But more than that, I loved the celebration of the moment. The baby’s awe of a new experience. The parents' laughter as they watched the birthday cake get absolutely demolished. The wide-eyed sugar rush on the baby’s face.
We weren’t just making pictures. We were making memories.
